David M. Stegall is a shareholder at Lawton & Cates who was admitted to the Wisconsin Bar in 2006 after graduating cum laude from Marquette University Law School. David began his legal career by working as an Assistant District Attorney in Milwaukee County. In his role as a prosecutor, David litigated hundreds of cases and served as the lead prosecutor in well over 40 jury trials ranging from minor misdemeanors through the most serious felony cases.
David left the District Attorney’s office so he could focus on helping people achieve justice. In private practice, David focuses 100% on litigation. Put simply, David’s clients seek him out to represent and defend them when the stakes are the highest. In David’s criminal practice he has successfully obtained not guilty verdicts in high stakes cases ranging from Attempted First Degree Intentional Homicide, First Degree Sexual Assault, and Possession of Child Pornography among others.
In David’s civil practice, he focuses on being a zealous advocate for the rights of the injured. David has represented many injured people including victims of car accidents, dog bites, and work-related injuries. David has consistently achieved great results of his clients, including at trial. In 2019, David was selected to co-author the Traffic Law and Practice Guide, which is published by the State Bar of Wisconsin and relied upon by attorneys and judges throughout the state as an authoritative reference guide.

David a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin and handles cases all over Wisconsin. He is also a member of the Wisconsin Association for Justice, American Inns of Court, and the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Prior to attending law school, David served in the United States Army as a Cavalry Officer stationed at various posts throughout the United States. David is a passionate supporter of our military veterans and proudly serves on the Veteran’s Advisory Board. In addition, David volunteers at the Veteran’s Law Center and remains active in other veteran’s causes.
